Jenkins, Smyth and Olson Claim MAAC Men's Basketball Weekly Honors

MAAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WESLEY JENKINS, SAINT PETER'S
Junior, Guard, 6-2, 195, Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech

Jenkins, a junior guard, led the Peacocks to a 3-0 week, averaging 19.0 points and 6.3 rebounds. He also had nine assists, a block and six steals for the week. On Jan.11, Jenkins scored 27 points (11-20 from the field), and also registered five rebounds and four assists in the Peacocks' first win over Niagara since 2006. He followed that up with a 26-point performance at Rider on Friday night, shooting 9-21 from the field and grabbing nine rebounds.

 


MAAC CO-ROOKIES OF THE WEEK

KYLE SMYTH, IONA
Freshman, Guard, 6-4, 185, River Edge, N.J./Don Bosco Prep

Smyth, a freshman guard, averaged 9.0 points in Iona's 3-0 week. At Loyola, he led the team with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting and recorded three steals in the win. Smyth was on his way to another solid effort vs. Niagara at home, scoring seven first half points in 12 minutes before being forced to leave the game with an injury. He returned to the lineup and scored eight critical points in the second half vs. Rider. Smyth's three-pointer with 14:24 to play ended a 9-2 Rider run that saw the Gaels' lead slip to just four points.


ROBERT OLSON, LOYOLA
Freshman, Guard, 6-4, 175, Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep

Olson, a freshman guard, entered the week averaging 4.4 points and averaged 11.3 points for the week, scoring double figures twice. He shot 52.2 percent (12-23) from the floor, 45.5 percent (5-11) from three-point range and was perfect from the free-throw line (5-5). Olson also collected nine rebounds and averaged an assist and a steal per game for the week. He scored a career-high 20 points to lead Loyola to a home win over Marist, making seven of 11 from the field (.636) and 50 percent (4-8) from three-point range.
