Manhattan Sweeps Indoor Track & Field Performer of the Week Honors
MAAC Sports
Edison, NJ - Manhattan College's Tom Bechert and Andrea
Nyback were named the Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Performers of
the Week.
Bechert, a 6-3 junior
from Munich, Germany, set a school record in the heptathlon with an
NCAA-leading score of 5,819 points at the Brother Jasper Invitational last
weekend. Bechert shattered Rajne
Svenssohn's old school mark of 5,503, set in 2004, and his score was nearly 600
points better than this season's previous NCAA-best, the 5,263 posted by Kent
State's Dexter Shreve. Bechert, who has
also qualified for the IC4A Championships in three individual events, is a
virtual lock to be one of the 16 heptathletes selected for the NCAA Indoor
Championships in Fayetteville,
Ark., on March 8-9.
Nyback, a 5-7 senior from Koping, Sweden, achieved an ECAC-qualifying score in the
pentathlon at last weekend's Brother Jasper Invitational. Needing to run the final event, the 800
meters, in 2:40 or better to reach the qualifying standard of 3,450 points, she
posted a time of 2:39.30, giving her 3,457 points in the five-event
competition.
The MAAC Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field
Championships will be held on Friday, February 15th at The Armory Track &
Field Center in New York City.
