EDISON, NJ – Thirty eight teams from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s membership received Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for outstanding academic performance for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.

The Public Recognition Awards are given to teams scoring in the top 10 percent of their sport with their APR scores. Each year, the NCAA tracks classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team, with the APR serving as the “annual scorecard.” The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention. The most recent APR scores are multi-year rates based on the 2008-09 season through the 2011-12 academic years.

The 38 MAAC teams represented 20 different sports, and there were teams from 11 women’s sports and nine men’s sports. Each member of the MAAC had at least one team receive a Public Recognition Award.

Loyola Maryland had the most teams honored, with seven, including the men’s basketball program, which won the 2012 MAAC championship. Fairfield, Marist, Niagara and Siena each had five teams cited, including Siena’s women’s golf program, the 2012 MAAC champion. Canisius and Iona each had three teams recognized, while Rider and Saint Peter’s had two each, and Manhattan had one.

Fairfield, Loyola, and Siena were among 61 schools who have one or more teams that have earned Public Recognition Awards for eight consecutive reports.

Quinnipiac and Monmouth, who officially join the MAAC on July 1, were also represented in the latest report. Quinnipiac had five teams cited, while Monmouth had one team. Additionally, Monmouth is one of the 61 schools with a team having been recognized for eight consecutive reports.

Nationally, 268 schools out of the total 346 Division I colleges and universities had at least one team receive a Public Recognition Award.
