EDISON, N.J. - Iona College men's basketball freshman Schadrac Casimir was named ECAC Co-Rookie of the Week.
Freshman Schadrac Casimir broke a 34-year old Iona rookie scoring record with a 40-point effort vs. Delaware State Wednesday night. It matched the highest single-game scoring output in NCAA Division I thus far this season. Casimir shot 11-of-13 from the field, 8-of-9 from beyond the arc and 10-of-11 from the free throw line to account for the point total. Gary Springer Sr. (an Iona Goal Club Hall of Famer and the last freshman, one of two all-time) to ever win the MBWA Haggerty Award for New York Metropolitan Player of the Year) held the previous record of 35 against Wagner on Jan. 13. 1981. His eight three pointers also set a new Iona freshman record, surpassing Iona three-point king Sean Armand’s six long distance connections on two occasions in 2010-11. For the week, Casimir averaged 21.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists while holding a 54.5 field goal percentage, 64.3 3 field goal percentage and 90.9 free throw percentage.
Casimir is a two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week winner and is currently No. 10 in the MAAC in scoring and No. 1 among the league's rookies.
He shares the ECAC honor with Eric Paschall of Fordham University.
