Monmouth Remains Unbeaten in Men's Basketball; League Play Continues

EDISON, N.J. – Monmouth University took sole possession of first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings as the Hawks improved to 4-0 following the first set of league games to open the calendar year. Fairfield, Iona, and Rider sit tied for second place with 2-1 conference marks, while five teams hold 2-2 records.

The Hawks extended their overall win streak to four games as the team earned road victories at Canisius (Jan. 2) and at Niagara (Jan. 4) to improve to 4-0 in the MAAC and 7-7 overall. Monmouth will put its unblemished MAAC record on the line this week on Friday (Jan. 9) at home in the MAC against Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.

The Stags, Gaels, and Broncs all sit tied in second place in the current league standings. Iona earned a road victory against Siena on Sunday (Jan. 4) in its lone contest of the week and resume action this week at home versus Quinnipiac on Tuesday (Jan. 6) and Canisius on Saturday (Jan. 10). Fairfield dropped its lone contest of the week to Siena at home, while Rider beat Marist on the road. Fairfield and Rider resume action tonight at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, at 7 p.m. on ESPN3. The Stags visit the Times Union Center to face Siena on Sunday (Jan. 11) at 2 p.m., while Rider is home against hOUR Glass rival Saint Peter’s on Saturday (Jan. 10) at 2 p.m.

Canisius, Manhattan, Niagara, Saint Peter’s, and Siena all currently own 2-2 conference records heading into this week.

The Griffs lost both contest this past week and look to bounce back on the road against Marist on Thursday (Jan. 8) and Iona on Saturday (Jan. 10).

The Jaspers split their Western New York trip over the weekend and continue conference play at home this week on Wednesday (Jan. 7) hosting Saint Peter’s and on Saturday (Jan. 10) welcoming Niagara.

The Purple Eagles went 1-1 to open the New Year, and in addition to their second meeting with Manhattan on Saturday (Jan. 10), will face Siena on the road on Thursday (Jan. 8).

Along with Monmouth, Saint Peter’s was the only team to go 2-0 last week after topping Quinnipiac and Marist. The Peacocks return to the hard wood this upcoming week at Manhattan (Jan. 7) and at Rider (Jan. 10).

The Siena Saints split its two league games with the win coming against previously unbeaten Fairfield. The Saints host back-to-back home games against Niagara on Thursday (Jan 8) and Fairfield on Sunday (Jan. 11).    

Marist and Quinnipiac close out the upcoming week’s schedule on Sunday (Jan. 11) with a 1 p.m. meeting in Hamden, Connecticut.

The 2015 season culminates at the 2015 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York March 5-9. Tickets for the championships are available online at ticketmaster.com.
