Iona, Monmouth, Rider Tied for Top Spot in Men's Basketball

EDISON, N.J. – Iona College, Monmouth University, and Rider University are in a three-way tie at the top of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball standings with 4-1 records. Manhattan sits right outside of the top three at 4-2, while Fairfield rounds out the top five at 3-2.
The Gaels moved up in the standings last week by earning two home victories against Quinnipiac, 81-73, (Jan. 6) and Canisius, 79-76, (Jan. 10) for their third and fourth consecutive league wins after starting its league slate at 0-1.
The Broncs picked up their first win of the week on the road against Fairfield, 62-46, (Jan. 5) in a contest that was telecasted on ESPN3. Rider’s second victory came against hOURglass rival Saint Peter’s at home, 68-55, (Jan. 10) for the squad’s sixth-straight win.
The Hawks dropped their lone contest of the week to Quinnipiac, 68-64, (Jan. 9) at home on ESPN3, knocking Monmouth from the ranks of the unbeaten and snapping a four-game winning streak.
The Jaspers also notched two victories on their home floor last week, defeating Saint Peter’s, 68-63, (Jan. 7) and Niagara, 84-75, (Jan. 10) to extend their win streak to three.
The Stags closed out the top five at 3-2 after recording a 1-1 week. Fairfield bounced back from its early week loss to Rider with a 79-67 road victory against Siena on Sunday (Jan. 11) to end a five game skid and avenge a 68-67 defeat by the Saints from a week prior (Jan. 2).
The trio of Iona (7-0), Manhattan (4-0), and Rider (5-0) all remain unbeaten at home in the 2014-15 season.
Quinnipiac finished the week with a 2-1 record, earning its first two MAAC wins of the season in consecutive games, while Canisius and Siena both split its two conference contests.
The 2015 season culminates at the 2015 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York March 5-9. Tickets for the championships are available online at ticketmaster.com.
