Freshman Duo of Parker and Portley Earn Men's Basketball Weekly Awards

Player of the Week

Brian Parker, Marist

Fr., G, 6-2, 195, Cleveland, OH/Villa Angela St. Joseph

Parker had his first career double-double in an 89-83 win at Army West Point on Dec. 20, which was Marist’s lone game of this past week. He led the Red Foxes in both points (23) and rebounds (career-high 11). Parker shot 10-for-17 (.588) from the field, and added three assists in 35 minutes. In the first half, he led all scorers with 14 points as Marist scored a season-high 42 in the first 20 minutes. He helped the Red Foxes close out the victory by going 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 33 seconds. The win ended Army’s undefeated home record and snapped its five game winning streak.

Rookie of the Week

Antwon Portley, Saint Peter’s

Fr., G, 6-4, 165, Lancaster, TX/Lancaster

Portley notched his fourth game this season of 20 points or more with his 21-point output against nationally-ranked George Washington on Saturday. Portley shot 7-for-13 from the floor, 3 of 6 from 3-point land and 4 of 4 from the free throw line against the Colonials. He registered nine points in the first half and 12 points in the final frame in the Peacocks first game against a ranked opponent since playing Purdue in the NCAA Tournament in the 2010-11 season. Portley stuffed the stat sheet by adding three assists, two rebounds, a block and a steal against George Washington. The freshman, who leads the team with 15.6 points per game, has recorded three 20-point performances in his last six games.
