Siena Defeats Rider to Advance to the 2016 MAAC Volleyball Semifinals

FAIRFIELD, CT – Siena College defeated Rider University, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) to advance to the 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship Semifinals. The Saints will play in the Semifinals for the first time since 2014, when they went on to win the MAAC Volleyball Championship.

Saints’ senior outside hitter Briana Flagg registered 12 kills, which was tied for the match-high. Flagg hit .312 (12-for-32), recorded seven digs, and two blocks en route to victory. Junior middle hitter Samantha Pethokoukis added eight kills, three blocks, two aces, and two digs. The junior hit .438 (8-for-16) in the Saints’ victory.

Senior setter Haley Howell recorded a match-high 40 assists for the Saints. Howell registered eight digs and hit .667 (2-for-3) on the evening. Senior libero Kalehua Katagiri notched a match-high 16 digs for the Saints.

Siena took the first set (25-23). The Broncs had a 19-15 lead in the second set before the Saints went on a 10-4 run to close out the set and win (25-23). With a 2-0 match lead heading into the third set, Siena went up by as many as eight points in the third before ultimately winning (25-20).

Broncs’ sophomore Hailey Riede led Rider with 11 kills and hit .296 (11-for-27). The 2016 MAAC Setter of the Year, Veronica Koval recorded 35 assists, four kills, and four digs. Koval hit .667 (4-for-6) for the Broncs. Junior libero Emma Aldaya added a team-high 13 digs.

Siena College will now face the number one seed Fairfield University in the Semifinals of the 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship on Saturday, November 19 at 2:00 p.m. The 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship takes place at George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall from the campus of Fairfield University. The game will be aired live on ESPN3.
