Niagara, Canisius & Rider Advance to 2017 MAAC Men’s Basketball Quarterfinals

2017 Men’s Basketball First Round

The ninth seeded Niagara Purple Eagles were led by four double-digit scorers in its 88-69 win over Quinnipiac in the first game of the 2017 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship. Matt Scott led the Purple Eagles with 19 points, followed by Kahlil Dukes with 18, Chris Barton with 15 and James Towns with 14.

Niagara came out strong in the second half and shot 53.3 % from the field. They out-rebounded the Bobcats 44-32 with Maurice Taylor grabbing a game-high 16 boards. Quinnipiac was led by freshman and four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, Peter Kiss who had 15 points.

The Purple Eagles will now face top-seeded Monmouth University tomorrow night at 7pm on ESPN3 in quarterfinals action.

#7 Canisius College 77 - #10 Canisius College 73 | BOX SCORE

2017 Men’s Basketball First Round

Behind 23 points from senior Phil Valenti, the Canisius College Golden Griffins defeated #10 seed Marist College, 77-73. Valenti was 8-of-13 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. Kiefer Douse added 17 points for Canisius on 5-of-9 shooting, including going a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Three-point shooting was the difference in this first round game. The Griffs outshot the Red Foxes 24-9 from three-point range. Canisius was able to score 26 points off of 16 Marist turnovers.

Brian Parker had a big game off the bench for Marist. Parker was 10-of-15 from the field, scoring 22 points for the Red Foxes. Senior Khallid Hart scored 16 points in his final game for Marist. Hart finishes his career as Marist’s fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,879 points.

Canisius will now face second seeded Saint Peter’s University tomorrow night at 9:30 pm on ESPN3.


#6 Rider University 69 - #11 Manhattan College 68 | BOX SCORE

2017 Men’s Basketball First Round

Jimmy Taylor hit the game-winning three with four seconds left on the clock to give Rider a 69-68 win over Manhattan in the final game of the first round of the 2017 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship. Taylor finished with 16 points. Zavier Turner for Manhattan drove to the rim as time expired and made the basket, but the clock had hit zero.

Manhattan freshman Aaron Walker Jr. finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting for the Jaspers. Zane Waterman added 15 points while Zavier Turner added 11 points.

Kahlil Thomas and Norville Carey added 12 points each for the Broncs.

Rider will advance and take on Iona on Saturday, March 4 at 7pm on ESPN3
