Fairfield Earns 7-0 Win Over Niagara in Game One of the 2008 MAAC Softball Championship

Stratford, Conn. ? Third-seeded Fairfield University (25-23-1) earned a 7-0 win over second-seeded Niagara University (27-20), 7-0, in game one of the 2008 MAAC Softball Championship at DeLuca Field.

Kristie Trifiolis opened the contest by knocking a home run to left center field with the Stags’ first at-bat.  In the top of the third, Jenna DiBernardo singled to center field to bring in Julia Jacoby and Trifiolis to put Fairfield up, 3-0.

 

In the top of the fourth, Trifiolis singled to right center as Jess Stand and Meghan Borst recorded two more runs for the Stags (5-0).  In the seventh inning, Jacoby laid down a bunt towards the third base line to allow Stand to slide across home plate to give Fairfield a 6-0 lead.  Jacoby later scored off a pass ball to make it a 7-0 game.

 

Fairfield’s Sarah Minice (14-8) earned the win, giving up two hits while striking out two more.  Niagara’s starting pitcher Tiffany McCrory (10-9) threw for 5.0 innings, and gave up seven hits and five runs.

 

Fairfield will play the winner of today’s game between #1 Canisius College and #4 Marist College in Game 3, which is slated for Friday, May 9, at 11:00 a.m.  Niagara will play the loser of today’s second game tomorrow at approximately 1:00 p.m.
