Marist Earns Spot in Title Game of the 2008 MAAC Softball Championship

Fairfield, Conn. ? Fourth-seeded Marist College (24-29) earned a spot in the 2008 MAAC Softball Championship title game after defeating third-seeded Fairfield University (25-25-1), 6-1, in Game 5 of the tournament at Fairfield’s Alumni Softball Field.

Marist scored one run in the bottom of the third inning, with Mary Beth Pomes scoring on a wild pitch.  

 

The Red Foxes jumped onto the scoreboard again in the bottom of the fourth as Kate Molloy scored as Alison Catenacci doubled down the left field line.  Christina Rosano then plated home on a single to left center by Alanna Woody to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead.

 

In the sixth inning, Woody reached first on an error, allowing Annie Castellano to score.  Pomes then singled to center field in bring Catenacci across home plate.  Woody later scored on a single by Pamela de la Llave to give the Red Foxes their final three runs of the afternoon. 

 

Fairfield registered one run in the top of the seventh as Erin Frank doubled to left center and Kristina Lingo scored.

 

Marist’s Megan Rigos improved to 18-15 with the win, while Fairfield’s Sarah Minice finished the year at 15-10 on the mound.

 

Marist will play top-seeded Canisius College in Game 6 on Sunday, May 11, at 12:00 p.m.  If the Red Foxes win Game 6, the seventh and deciding game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
