Loyola College Picked to Win 2008 MAAC Men's Soccer Title

Edison, N.J. ? Loyola College, the defending MAAC Champion, has been picked to win the 2008 MAAC men’s soccer title in a preseason poll voted on by the league’s 10 head coaches.

 

The Greyhounds earned the top spot with 99 points in the poll, while Fairfield University finished second (86).  Saint Peter’s College was picked third with 77 points, and Canisius College was fourth with 60 points.  Iona College placed fifth (58), followed by Marist College (56), Niagara University (49), Siena College (26), Rider University (24) and Manhattan College (15).

 

Loyola’s Phil Bannister (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England) has been named the 2008 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.  Bannister, the 2007 MAAC Rookie of the Year, recorded 13 goals and seven assists last season for 33 points, placing him in a three-way tie for first place on the MAAC scoring list.

 

Joining Bannister at forward are Canisius’ Alan McGreal (Dublin, Ireland) and Iona’s Aly Lo (Ridgefield Park, N.J.).  In the midfield is Fairfield’s Matthew Uy (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), Loyola’s Eddie Dines (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England) and Saint Peter’s Chris DeAbreu (Pickering, Ontario).  The backs are anchored by Fairfield’s Tom Clements (Stowmarket, Suffolk), Loyola’s Tennant McVea (Belfast, Northern Ireland), Niagara’s Billy Gustafson (Rochester, N.Y.) and Saint Peter’s Assaf Sheleg (Kibbutz Maabarot, Israel).  Loyola’s Milos Kocic (Leskovac, Serbia) rounds out the team at the goalkeeper position.
