FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Eighteen former and current members of the Fairfield University Swimming & Diving teams will SWIM Across The Sound on August 7 to raise money for the St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation and its cancer prevention, support, and education programs.
The 23rd Annual SWIM Across The Sound involves approximately 250 amateur swimmers making the 16-mile open water trek from Port Jefferson, N.Y. to Bridgeport, Conn. to raise funds for cancer screening, education, support programs and to help provide financial assistance to cancer patients and their families in need. The Stags are fielding three teams in the inaugural University Challenge Team Relay which will also feature groups from UConn, Dartmouth, and Springfield College. The teams are responsible for raising $7,500 each.
Fairfield Alumni - Team 1 is made up of Sean McGowan '02, Rob Devine '08, Christian McEvoy '06, Jay Power '84, Kevin Young '02, and current senior Jonathan O'Connor. Fairfield Alumni - Team 2 consists of Brittany Hunter '07, Bridget McKeon '06, Erin Carrather '08, Liz Lawlor '08, Kate Roche '06, and Carolyn Sheppard '09. The third team, Fairfield University, is comprised of current Stags Tommy Peters, Stefan Toi, Brian Friedlander, and Andrew Robinson and 2010 grads Boris Romanovsky and Taylor Stecko.
McGowan, who will be participating in his fifth consecutive SWIM, helped organize the Fairfield Alumni teams. McGowan, whose mother is a cancer survivor, has been involved in the event since 2006 when his mother was diagnosed and an uncle passed away from the disease. This past year he has worked with Elizabeth Fry, the SWIM Marathon Director, to help develop the University Challenge category in hopes of getting more local colleges and universities involved in the event.
