Edison, N.J. - Bob McCloskey Insurance, a corporate partner of the MAAC, has awarded post-graduate scholarships to Niagara University men's soccer standout John Fiutowski and Fairfield University women's tennis notable Maria Voloshin.
Bob McCloskey Insurance is a national leader in the intercollegiate sports insurance field, marketing and administrating accident plans for over 30 years. The company handles hundreds of clients throughout the country with all their sports insurance needs, including intercollegiate sports, uninsured and underinsured student athlete coverage, intramurals, summer camps and clinics, and special events coverage.
As part of their agreement with the MAAC, Bob McCloskey Insurance provides a post-graduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete from the league's member institutions. The intent of the scholarship is to promote and encourage academically and athletically accomplished student-athletes to continue their education by attending graduate school. As part of the selection process, the committee will evaluate athletic and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrate leadership.
"It is with great pleasure that we present these scholarships to the two fine, deserving student-athletes that have been selected, and wish to extend our heartfelt wishes to their continued success in their future endeavors," Rob McCloskey, President of Bob McCloskey Insurance, said. "We also are very proud and excited to be a Corporate Partner of the MAAC, and look forward to a long-term relationship."
Fiutowski, a four-year starter in goal for the Purple Eagles, was inducted into Delta Epsilon Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma, where inductees are selected from GPA scores and involvement in the university and the community. In his senior year, he created the Teddy Bear Toss for the children of Haiti, in which over 500 teddy bears were tossed on the ice during intermission of a men's hockey game and then collected and shipped to Haiti. In 2008, Fiutowski recorded the most saves in goal in all of NCAA Division I men's soccer. In his senior year, he was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) University Men's Scholar All-East Region Second Team. Fiutowski graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in marketing and is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Niagara, studying strategic management.
"It is a great honor and privilege to have been selected as the male recipient of the Bob McCloskey Insurance MAAC Post Graduate Scholar-Athlete Scholarship," Fiutowski said. "I would like to sincerely thank my coaches and teammates on the Niagara Purple Eagles Soccer team and my professors at Niagara University for helping me achieve my potential. Finally, I would also like to thank Bob McCloskey Insurance for making this generous scholarship available and for selecting me from among so many other worthy candidates."
Voloshin, a former senior captain for the Stags' women's tennis team, was a two-year member of Fairfield's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was also a member of Sigma Xi, Mu Epsilon and Psi Chi. As an undergraduate, she was also a volunteer at Giant Steps, a private school for children with developmental disorders located in Fairfield, Conn. Voloshin earned a spot on Fairfield's Dean's Honor List for six consecutive semesters, as well as a three-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team and an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete. She graduated in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in classical studies, earning the 2009 Classical Studies Award. Voloshin is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Fairfield.
"I would like to thank the MAAC and Bob McCloskey Insurance," Voloshin said. "It is a great honor to be recognized and to be the recipient of the Bob McCloskey Insurance scholarship. Receiving this scholarship is a great opportunity to continue my education at Fairfield University. To have my accomplishments recognized publicly is humbling and I will continue to strive for excellence and hope to make those who support me proud."
