2011 Volleyball All-MAAC Teams Announced

Edison, NJ - Siena College's Taylor Akana has been named the 2011 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year by the league's head coaches and headlines this season's All-MAAC teams.

Akana, a sophomore from Kaneohe, Hawaii, led the MAAC with 4.46 kills per set and 345.5 total points in league play. She was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team and was selected to the All-MAAC Second Team last year as a freshman. Akana was also named Offensive Player of the Week once this season on Oct. 24.

Niagara's Hannah Hedrick and Siena's junior Lesli Akeo were named Co-Defensive Players of the Year. Hedrick, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, finished ninth in the league with 3.40 digs per set. Hedrick was also named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, is a three time All-MAAC First Team selection, and a two-time MAAC Championship Most Valuable Player. Akeo, a Kapolei, Hawaii native, finished third in the MAAC with 5.41 digs per set in league play. Akeo also ranks 44th nationally in digs per set.

Fairfield University sophomore Rachel Romansky earned MAAC Setter of the Year honors. The Denver, Colo. native was second in the league with 11.37 assists per set and had 37 total blocks on the season.

Niagara's Sam Morgan was chosen as the 2011 MAAC Libero of the Year. She ranks fourth nationally with 6.0 digs per set and led the MAAC with 6.29 digs per set in conference matches. Morgan, a senior native of Cincinnati, Ohio, has registered double-digit digs in 127 consecutive matches, the longest streak in the nation.  

Fairfield's Caitlin Stapleton was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year. She led the Stags with 291 total points and ranked third with 2.45 kills per set. The Milford, Conn. native was named Rookie of the Week twice this season on Oct. 17 and Oct. 31.  

The inaugural MAAC All-Rookie Team consists of Stapleton, Iona College's Catrina Warren, Manhattan College's Malia McGuinness and Hollegn Henderson, Marist College's Marisa Gilbert, and Siena's Jacqueline Skeen.

The All-MAAC First Team consists of Fairfield's Kendal Dirkin, Marist's Joanna Foss, Niagara's Hedrick, Morgan, and Kari Honomichl, and Siena's Akana.

Canisius College's Danielle Brawn and Samantha Good, Fairfield's Brianna Dixion, Romansky, and Stapleton, Iona's Alicja Pawelec and Warren, Manhattan's McGuinness, and Niagara's Ellen Senf make up the All-MAAC Second Team.

Fairfield head coach Alija Pittenger was selected as the 2011 Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year. Pittenger led the Stags to a 16-2 conference mark and 19-9 overall record in her fourth year at the helm. She also led the team to an eight match win streak during the season which ties for 11th best in school history.
