Edison, NJ - Marist College's Krystian Witkowski and Niagara University's Carl Haworth were selected in 2012 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft on Tuesday.
Witkowski was selected as the 13th pick in the second round (32nd overall) by the Philadelphia Union.
During his four years at Marist, Witkowski, known for his technical and play-making abilities, scored 21 goals and had assists on 12 for a career total of 54 points. The Union finished their 2011 season in third place with a 11-8-15 record in the Eastern Conference. Peter Nowak, a decorated player on the international scene, is the head coach of the third-year Philadelphia franchise.
"I am so proud of Krystian. He has given so much to the Marist program over the past four seasons. I can't wait for him to represent Marist in the professional ranks. I wish him nothing but the best and hope that he has a great career. Krystian was a total student-athlete throughout his four years and this is a great way to cap his career" said Head Coach Matt Viggiano, who was with Witkowski as he heard the news in the men's soccer office.
Haworth was taken with the first pick in the fourth round (58th overall) by the expansion-franchise Montreal Impact.
The draft completes an offseason that saw the forward earn several MAAC honors, including MAAC Offensive
Player of the Year and spots on the First Team All-MAAC and the MAAC
All-Academic Team. His effort was recognized nationally as well. Haworth was named to the
East College Athletic Conference’s (ECAC) First-Team All-Stars and the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-North
Atlantic First Team. Haworth capped his career at Niagara with a 32-point season. His 12
goals and eight assists led the MAAC and added to his career total of 35
goals and 21 assists for 91 points over his 71 games at Monteagle
Ridge.
"Carl getting drafted by the Montreal Impact is a testament to the talent he has and the hard work and determination he puts into every game and training," Niagara men’s soccer head coach Chase Brooks said.
