MAAC Sports
Edison, NJ – Saint Peter’s College’s Aaron Lucas and Iona College’s Leonard Korir were named the MAAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Co-Performers of the Week, while Manhattan College’s Andrea Nyback earned the honor on the women’s side.
Lucas, a senior from Union, N.J., led the Peacocks to a 6th place finish at the Metropolitan Championships with a first place finish in the high jump event. His mark of 2.13 meters (6’11.75’’) is a Saint Peter’s College record. In addition to being tied for 39th in the country, his jump ranks as the highest of any MAAC athlete this season.
Korir's first place finish in the 3,000-meter run led a quartet of Iona College men's track performers at 2012 BU Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University. Korir's time of 7:54.59 was his second fastest career time and third fastest in school history sitting behind Richard Kiplagat's 7:49.98 (2006) and his own mark of 7:51.40 set in the same meet last season. Korir topped Binghamton's Erik van Ingen by less than two seconds. There were 42 competitors in the event
Nyback, a junior from Koping, Sweden, qualified for the ECAC Championships in two different events at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships on Thursday. In the pentathlon, she missed breaking her own school-record by a mere eight points, finishing with a score of 3709 to win the competition by more than 250 points. In the long jump portion of the competition, Nyback leaped an ECAC-qualifying 5.74 meters (18 feet, 10 inches). She also set a personal-best in the shot put (11.35 m, 37’3).
The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held on Friday, February 17th at The New Balance Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.
