Edison, NJ - Loyola's Jay Mulieri was chosen as the MAAC Men's Golfer of the Month for April, while Siena's Victoria Nguyen and Hartford's Sarah Sideranko were named the Women's Co-Golfers of the Month.
Mulieri, a senior from Silver Spring, Md., finished runner-up in Loyola’s only competition this month, the NC State Wolf pack Open (April 14-15). Following the first of two rounds, Mulieri sat tied with NC State’s James Chapman and Lamar’s Luke Jerling for the day’s best score at 1-under 71. Mulieri then continued the second day at under-par again, improving his score with a 3-under 69. He finished the tournament in second place at 4-under 140. Mulieri will take a streak of five-straight rounds where he has shot par or under into this weekend’s MAAC Championship.
Nguyen, a freshman from Santa Ana, Calif., established herself as a force during the month of April. She led the Saints at both tournaments the team played in, finishing tied for 13th at Brown (shooting two rounds of 80) before finishing in sole possession of second at Hartford (shooting 73 and 77). Nguyen's second-place performance in the latter event boosted the Green and Gold to a 19-shot margin of victory as a team, and it was the best finish by a Siena women's golfer since Katelynn Mannix won the 2011 MAAC Championships.
Sideranko, a junior from New Britain, Conn., tied for eighth place on the leader board at Hartford’s Hawks Invitational April 16-17. Sideranko helped lift the Hawks to a fifth-place team finish in the tournament. Sideranko led the Hawks on both days of the tournament, turning in the lowest single-round score (78) of any Hartford golfer in the field.
The 2012 Men's and Women's Golf Championships will be held April 27_29 at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
