Scott Machado of Iona Named Met Player of the Year

NEW YORK -- Scott Machado of Iona College was named the winner of the 79th Haggerty Award as the 2011-12 All-Met Division I Men's College Basketball Player of the Year, presented by the National Invitation Tournament and the Met Basketball Writers Assn.

A 6-1 senior guard from Queens, N.Y., Machado led the nation with 9.9 assists per game and led the MAAC with 327 assists. He is the first NCAA player to record 300+ assists since 1993. Named the Pepsi Max MAAC Player of the Year, Machado became the all-time MAAC leader and is now 18th in the nation all-time with 880 career assists. In scoring, he had 13.6 points per game, and rang up a rare triple double achievement.

Machado is the fifth player from Iona to win the Haggerty Award. He follows Warren Isaac (1965), Jeff Ruland (1980), Gary Springer (1981) and Steve Burtt (1984).

Steve Masiello of Manhattan College, along with Danny Hurley, formerly of Wagner College, was named Co-Coaches of the year.

Masiello, a former Manhattan assistant, led the Jaspers in his first season as head coach to a 21-13 record. The Jaspers advanced into the second round of the postseason CollegeInsider.com Tournament, capturing their first postseason victory since playing in the NIT in 2006.

Joining Machado on the All-Met first team is: Mike Glover, Iona; Moe Harkless, St. John's; Julian Boyd, LIU; Jordan Theodore and Herb Pope, Seton Hall.

Named to the second team were: Chris Gaston, Fordham; Rakim Sanders, Fairfield; George Beamon, Manhattan; Jamal Olasewere, LIU; D'Angelo Harrison, St. John's; and Mike Moore, Hofstra.

Named to the third team are: Brian Barbour, Columbia; Lamont Jones, Iona; Isaiah Wilkerson, NJIT; Eli Carter, Rutgers; and Elia Ellis, Army.

Moe Harkless of St. John's was named Rookie of the Year.
