Iona Defends MAAC Water Polo Title with Win over Wagner

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Junior utility Alyssa Turza was named Most Outstanding Performer as she helped guide top-seeded Iona College to a 10-9 overtime victory over third-seeded Wagner College in the 2012 MAAC Women's Water Polo Championship Game, held at the McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College.
Turza scored four goals in today's match, while Cecilia Leonard scored three goals for the Gaels. Mackenzie Mone, Katie Stelnicki and Erika Lauraitis each added one goal apiece for the Maroon and Gold.
Wagner's Chelsea Beck and Lauren French paced their team with three goals each this afternoon. Rachel Burns, Michelle Greenough and Stacy McGregor each contributed one goal for the Seahawks.
Joining Turza on the All-Tournament Team are teammates Leonard and Marisa Gaynor, along with Beck and French from Wagner, Kelly Kline from Marist College and Hannah Ishida from Villanova University.
Iona receives the automatic berth to the 2012 NCAA Water Polo Championship, which will take place on May 11-13 at the Aztec Aquaplex in San Diego, Calif.
