Anthony Vega, Manhattan Baseball
Jr. - Patchogue, N.Y.
Vega has
started every game this season, as Manhattan won its second consecutive MAAC
regular season title. The Jaspers'
leadoff hitter, he ranks in the top five in the MAAC in eight different
statistical categories. Vega paces the
Jaspers with a .343 batting average, 69 hits and 38 runs scored. He also has five home runs and 31 RBIs to go
along with nine doubles and four triples.
In addition, Vega has been successful on 31-of-34 stolen base attempts,
placing him second on Manhattan's all-time single season stolen base chart.
One of two
Jaspers to appear in every game this season, he's the only one who's done so at
the same position. Vega has been stellar
in center field, committing just one error in 129 defensive chances.
Manhattan's
Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Vega's also a sprinter on the Jaspers' indoor
track & field team, and he scored points in both the 60 meters and 200
meters at the 2012 MAAC Indoor Championships.
Shannon Jones, Siena Softball
Jr. - Troy, N.Y
Jones had a
banner year for Siena softball in 2012. The junior led the MAAC in batting
average (.434), home runs (14), RBI (43), hits (66), runs (46), total bases
(127), and slugging percentage (.836), set single-season program records for
homers, hits, and runs, and established new career marks for batting average
(.396) and doubles (39). Additionally, Jones became just the third player in
Siena history with more than 100 career RBI, and tied the career record in that
category as well with 119 runs driven in.
It's been a
busy offseason for the junior. She was also named Siena College's Female
Student Athlete of the Year, the MAAC Co-Player of the Year, a MAAC
All-Academic Team honoree for the second consecutive season, a Capital One
Academic All-District First Team selection, and an NFCA Second Team All-Region
award-winner. In the classroom, she carries a 3.43 cumulative GPA while
majoring in Biology.
