NCAA Woman of the Year Nominees Include 10 MAAC Student-Athletes

Edison, N.J. – A total of 10 female student-athletes from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference member institutions have been nominated for the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year Award as announced by the National Collegiate Athletic Association on Monday.

In all, 455 female student-athletes were nominated for the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year award. Of those nominees, 214 participated in Division I, 90 participated in Division II, and 151 participated in Division III athletics.

The Woman of the Year award honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.

To be eligible for the NCAA Woman of the Year award nominee must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2012-13 competitive season and received her undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2013 term. Nominees must also have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

The top 10 honorees and the nine finalists from Divisions I, II and III and the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year will be honored at a dinner in Indianapolis October 20, 2013. 

Below is a brief bio of each of the MAAC nominees:

Allison Severyn finished her career at Canisius as the all-time digs leader in the program’s history, with 2,228. The 2010 MAAC Libero of the Year was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic selection. Severyn participated in a number of community service efforts, including Buffalo’s Project Groundwork, the South Buffalo Community Table, Special Olympics volleyball tournament and Meals on Wheels.

 

A first-team All-MAAC performer as a senior, Brianna Dixion led the Fairfield volleyball team to the MAAC Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, earning tourney MVP honors. Dixion was a four-year member of Fairfield’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and also participated in such projects as Relay for Life, the Lower Fairfield County Food Drive and National Girls and Women’s Sports Day.

 

Fairfield’s Molly Graffam was a member of the Stags’ Varsity 8 gold medal winner at the MAAC Championships last April. The biochemistry major has been named to the MAAC’s All-Academic team for three consecutive years (2011-13). A three-time team captain, Graffam has been a member of Fairfield’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) for four years. She has participated in the St. Jude Relay, which raises money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, for the past four years, among other community-based efforts.

 

Theresa Harvey of Iona was a two-sport standout for the Gaels as a swimmer and on the volleyball court. In the pool, she was a 12-time MAAC Championship finalist and holds the Gaels’ individual records in the 50 and 200 freestyle. As a member of Iona’s volleyball team, Harvey finished her career second all time in digs. As a senior, she participated in the Wellspring Water Collection project, managing recycling bins on campus with proceeds going towards building and supplying fresh water wells in Africa.

 

Nichole Schiro of Loyola Maryland was a three-time All-MAAC first team selection in women’s soccer, and became the first player in MAAC history to be named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year three times (2010-12). Loyola’s all-time leader in goals scored and total points, Schiro was a three time MAAC All-Academic team selection and was a CoSIDA first-team Academic All-America selection in 2012. She served as a volunteer at Mercy Hospital, the Bean and Bread Soup Kitchen, Women in Sports Day and at a local dentist office.

 

Remarkably, Julie Bies appeared in every set of every match for the Manhattan volleyball team in her four years on the Riverdale campus. A three-time team captain and three-time MAAC All-Academic selection, Bies finished her career with 1,618 digs, one of only three Jaspers to surpass the 1,500-dig mark. Bies led service trips to Kenya, Ecuador and Ethiopia during her collegiate career, and also served as a “one-on-one” coach at Camp Abilities in Long Island, for youngsters who are visually impaired.

 

Kate Conard, who ended her career at Marist as one of the Red Foxes’ most decorated swimmers ever, was a three-time MAAC Championship Swimmer of the Year.  Conard holds Marist records in four relay events, and seven individual events, and won 11 of 12 individual events and 15 of 18 relays she competed in at the MAAC Championships. A three-time MAAC All-Academic team selection, Conard worked with the Special Olympics and Girls Scouts, and was a Sunday School Teacher, during her career.

 

Rider’s Megan Elgin was an accomplished runner for the Broncs’ women’s cross country and track teams. Elgin finished fifth in the MAAC Cross Country Championships as a senior, and was third in the 10K and fourth in the 5K at the 2013 MAAC Outdoor Championships. Elgin was a six-time MAAC All-Academic selection. While at Rider she participated in National Girls and Women’s Sports Day all four years, and was also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and volunteered at A Women’s Place in Doylestown, PA.

 

Renee Brzyski has been an outstanding performer for the Saint Peter’s indoor and outdoor track programs for the past four years, and helped lead the Peacocks to three MAAC Indoor Championships (2011-13) and two MAAC Outdoor Championships (2011-12) in her career. She was a two-time indoor champion in the 60-meters hurdles (2012 and 2013), setting a MAAC record each time.  An outstanding student, Brzyski is also very active in the community, and plans to spend two weeks in Ecuador as a member of the Global Outreach team working with a day care center as well educational and vocational training programs.

 

Lesli Akeo will long be remembered as one of the top volleyball players in Siena history. A two-time co-captain, she is the all-time Saints record holder for digs in a career (2,285 in 116 matches), and is a two-time First Team All-MAAC selection. She was the MAAC’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2011, and the MAAC’s Libero of the Year in 2012.  Akelo is a founding member of Siena’s Polynesian Culture Club, was the volleyball team’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative, and a three-time MAAC All-Academic selection.
