Top-Seeded Monmouth Advances To Semis

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Monique Plescia scored the match’s only goal as the top-seeded Monmouth University women’s soccer team defeated ninth-seeded Canisius College 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports.
The victory propelled Monmouth, the MAAC’s regular season champion with an unbeaten ledger of 8-0-2, into the semifinals, against fifth-seeded Rider, on Sunday at 11:00, in a game to be broadcast on ESPN3. Monmouth improved to 15-1-2 overall.
Plescia scored the decisive goal at 67:23 in the second half, taking a feed from Karly Tolentino. It was the senior forward’s sixth goal of the season, tied for second highest on the team. The assist was Tolentino’s first point this year.
Monmouth outshot Canisius 13-7, and had a 6-2 edge on corner kicks. Monmouth goalkeeper Ashley Lewis made four saves, while Canisius’ Megan Tock had as well.
Monmouth is riding a 12-match unbeaten streak (10 wins, two ties) and has outscored its opponents 34-6 on the season.
Canisius, which saw its three-match winning streak snapped, concludes its season at 6-14-1.
