LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Behind two goals from freshman forward Alexis McTamney, the Monmouth University women’s soccer team defeated Fairfield University 2-0 to win the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports.

With the victory, the Hawks claim the MAAC’s automatic bid the 2013 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. The Hawks will learn where they will be headed in the NCAA tournament when the field is unveiled on the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 11, at 4:30 p.m. The Selection Show can be seen at www.NCAA.com.

After a scoreless first half, McTamney scored what proved to be the game winner when she tallied on a  rebounded shot just 1:30 into the second half. Monique Plescia assisted on the goal for Monmouth.

McTamney, the MAAC’s Rookie of the Year, tallied an insurance goal at 67:21 when she scored on a deflected free kick. McTamney, who was also selected to the All-Tournament team, now has a team leading 11 goals following her pair today.

The Monmouth defense was stingy throughout the regular season, and led by Tournament MVP Ashley Lewis, kept the pressure on during the 2013 MAAC Championship. The Hawks did not allow a goal during the tournament, and recorded their 16th shutout of the season in the title game, a program record.

Monmouth outshot the Stags 16-15, and had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Lewis was credited with six saves.

Fairfield struggled to score in the MAAC Championship. The Stags were shutout in their quarterfinal round matchup with Manhattan, advancing to the semifinals with a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks. Fairfield needed just one goal in its 1-0 win over Siena in the semifinal round, and were blanked in the championship game.

The victory upped Monmouth’s record to 17-1-2, and the Hawks extended their unbeaten string to 14. In addition to MVP Lewis and McTamney, Dana Costello and Alexa Freguletti were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Stags, who advanced to the title game of the MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship for the ninth time, saw their season come to a close with a 12-7-2 mark. The Stags placed Nikki Stanton, Ashley Small and Megan O’Brien on the All-Tournament team.
