Wagner Takes First Water Polo Semifinal Game

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Top-seed Wagner College defeated fourth-seed Villanova University, 16-6, in the first semifinal of the 2014 MAAC Women’s Water Polo Championship, held at Marist College’s McCann Natatorium.

Wagner got out to an early lead and led Villanova at the half 11-5. Wagner did not let up before closing out the game with a final score of 16-6, allowing just one goal in the second half. MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, Jess Lundgren, finished the day with four goals, while Megan Rodriguez scored 4 of her own for the Seahawks. First Team All-MAAC performer Jessica Burdge scored 3 goals in the match. Both Burdge and Lundgren eclipsed the 100 goal mark for the season during the game. Rachel Burns added two goals, while Lily Doerfler, Gabryel Oloapu and Stacy McGregor each netted one goal apiece. 

Naomi Ng fought a tough battle throughout the matchup and finished the afternoon with 4 goals, while Callan Edwards and Sarina Shibata scored one goal each for the Wildcats.

Wagner will play the winner of the second semifinal matchup between second-seed Marist College and third seeded Iona College for the 2014 MAAC Water Polo League Championship title at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 27. Villanova will play the loser of the second semifinal matchup in the consolation game tomorrow at noon.

The winner of the MAAC Water Polo League Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Water Polo Championship. The selection show will take place on Monday, April 28.
