Red Foxes Defeat Gaels in Second Semifinal Game

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Second-seed Marist College defeated third-seed Iona College, 12-10, in the second semifinal of the 2014 MAAC Women’s Water Polo Championship, held at Marist College’s McCann Natatorium.

Marist put an end to the Iona Gaels streak of three consecutive MAAC Water Polo League Championships. First Team All-MAAC performer Jessica Hamby led the Red Foxes to victory scoring six goals.  Brooke Else, a Second Team All-MAAC selection, netted two goals in the contest.  First Team All-MAAC goaltender, Skyler Henry, minded the net for Marist keeping the Red Foxes ahead after the start of the second period, allowing no more than three goals in a period during the game.

The Iona Gaels were paced by Katie Stelnicki who scored 3 goals in the match up, and by First Team All-MAAC performer and 2014 Offensive Player of the Year Amy Olsen who also netted three goals. Senior Sarah Hanly scored two goals, while Hannah Cross and Taylor Silva each added a goal.

#2 Marist will play #1 Wagner for the championship title at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 27. #3 Iona will face #4 Villanova in the consolation game tomorrow at noon.
