Wagner Named 2014 MAAC Water Polo League Champions
MAAC Sports
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Wagner College took home their first MAAC Championship since 2007 today. Sophomore Jessica Lundgren, who was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year earlier in the week, was named the 2014 MAAC Water Polo Championship Most Outstanding Performer as she helped guide first-seeded Wagner College to a 9-7 victory over second-seeded Marist College in the 2014 MAAC Women's Water Polo Championship Final, held at the McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College.
Lundgren paced her team with four goals this afternoon, while continuing to play her terrific defense. Wagner junior Jessica Burdge and sophomore Megan Rodriguez added two goals each for the Seahawks. Rodriguez did not score through the initial three quarters but came through big for Wagner in the fourth quarter, scoring the game winning goal along with an insurance goal late in the contest to put away the Red Foxes. Lily Doerfler also contributed a goal for the Seahawks. Freshman goaltender Emily Riddle, an All-MAAC Second Team selection, held strong between the pipes to suppress Marist’s offensive attack.
Hannah Levien led Marist with three goals in the championship contest. Senior captain Yuriria Chavez scored two goals for the Red Foxes, while another Marist captain, Anna-Lena Hathaway, and freshman Nastassia McGlothlin each netted a goal in the match up. First Team All-MAAC goaltender Skyler Henry held the number one seeded Seahawks through most of four quarters before Wagner was able to capitalize. Jessica Hamby, who made the All-MAAC First Team and scored six goals against Iona in the semifinal round, was held scoreless in today's match. 2014 MAAC Rookie of the Year Amanda Amorosa was held without a goal for the entirety of the championship.
Joining Lundgren on the All-Tournament Team are teammates Jessica Burdge and Megan Rodriguez, along with Jessica Hamby and Hannah Levien from Marist, Amy Olsen from Iona College and Naomi Ng from Villanova University.
Wagner receives the automatic berth to a play in game for the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship. The NCAA Women’s Water Polo selection show will take place on Monday, April 28.
