FAIRFIELD, Conn. –  Eileen McCann of Iona College has been named the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and leads the 2014 All-MAAC Softball Teams chosen by the MAAC’s head coaches.

McCann, a graduate student and outfielder for the Gaels, leads the MAAC with a .400 batting average. She is third in the league with a .650 slugging percentage and .475 on base percentage, and tied for second with four triples. McCann has 40 hits and has scored 28 runs, and has hit five homers with 24 RBI. McCann, of Chino, Calif., returned for her final year as a Gael after being sidelined with an injury 16 games into last season.

Fairfield University’s Rae Ball is the 2014 MAAC Pitcher of the Year. Ball has compiled a 12-8 record with a 2.99 ERA. Her 12 wins are tied for fourth best in the MAAC, and she has not allowed a triple, tied for the league lead in that category. Ball, from Scottsdale, Ariz., has 68 strikeouts, and has yielded just 33 walks. The senior righthander leads the Stags in victories, complete games (13) and innings pitched (110).

Kristen Turner of Iona was selected 2014 MAAC Rookie of the Year. The freshman infielder hit .344 for the Gaels, starting all 41 games. Turner led the MAAC with 50 RBI and a .688 slugging percentage, and was second in the conference with 11 home runs. She was tied for second with 86 total bases.

McCann, Ball and Turner were all named to the All-MAAC First Team. The First Team also includes catcher Lauren Liseth of Fairfield and infielders Kristen Filicia of Fairfield, Krysten Van Natta of Marist College, and Abby Carpenter of Siena College. The outfield includes Lauren Filicia of Fairfield and Taylor Kuzma of Marist. Gianna Kinhofer of Fairfield is the designated player, while Kate Bowen of Manhattan College is the utility player. Jessika Jo-Sandrini of Siena joins Ball as a first team pitcher.

The All-MAAC Second Team includes catcher Elena Bowman of Manhattan, and infielders Rachel Shotzbarger of Monmouth University, Brianna Schauer of Iona, Nikki Barba of Quinnipiac University, Bridget Hogan of Niagara University and Stephanie Viggiano of Siena. Second team outfielders include Allie Hand of Iona, Maureen Duddy of Marist, Janna Korak of Marist, Sammy Ruffolo of Fairfield, and Jessica Berzins of Canisius College.  The second team designated player is Lindsey Silfer of Canisius and the second team utility player is Alyssa Lancaster of Siena. Jenny Consaul of Canisius and Carly Argyle of Iona were the second team pitchers.

Iona College head coach Melissa Inouye was named as the 2014 Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year. Inouye, in her second year as head coach of the Gaels, took a team that was the preseason pick to finish sixth in the MAAC and led them to a third-place finish in 2014 with a 14-6 record, just two games behind first-place Marist. Last year, in her first season, Inouye guided the Gaels to a 9-7 mark in league play and a fourth place finish.
