Marist Men, Quinnipiac Women Picked as 2017 MAAC Tennis Preseason Favorites

EDISON, NJ – The Marist College Red Foxes have been named the preseason favorite to win the 2017 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship, while Quinnipiac University was the unanimous choice to win the 2017 MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship. Marist College received a total of 60 points in the poll, earning five of eight first place votes.

Monmouth University tied for second in the MAAC Men’s Tennis Preseason Poll, receiving 54 points with one first place vote. Quinnipiac University also finished with 54 points and two first place votes. At the 2016 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship, Monmouth University won its first MAAC Tennis Championship in program history.  The Hawks finished the 2016 season with a 12-9 record, going 6-1 in MAAC play.

Fairfield University finished in third with 37 points. Niagara University finished with 31 points to net fourth place, while Siena College comes in at fifth with 27 points.  Saint Peter’s University takes sixth place with 16 points and Rider University rounds out the poll with 9 points.

On the women’s side, the defending 2016 MAAC Women’s Tennis Champions Quinnipiac University was picked as the unanimous preseason favorite according to the leagues head coaches. Quinnipiac earned a total of 64 points. The Bobcats won its third consecutive MAAC Championship in 2016. Quinnipiac went 7-0 in the MAAC last season. Quinnipiac went into the Championship as the #1 seed, and defeated both #4 Niagara and #3 Marist to clinch the 2016 MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship.  Quinnipiac returns senior Sydney Young who was the 2016 Most Outstanding Female Player.

Coming in second on the women’s side is Siena College with 52 points. Marist College came in third with 49 points, while Niagara University earned fourth place with 38 points. Fairfield University finished in fifth place with 37 points, while Rider University came in at sixth place with 19 points.  Monmouth University sits in seventh place with 16 points and Saint Peter’s University rounds out the poll with 13 points.
