Buffalo, N.Y. - Canisius College sophomore Shane Davis was named a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pro-Line Athletic 2009 preseason All-American. Davis, who was named to the Second Team, was the only player from the MAAC to receive the honor from the NCBWA.
As a freshman for the Golden Griffins, Davis was named a Third-Team All-American by three different organizations and Freshman All-American by five organizations. Davis tied for first among all freshman pitchers in the NCAA with his 12 victories. The 6-foot lefty, who became the first player in league history to receive MAAC Pitcher of the Year and MAAC Rookie of the Year honors in the same season, and ranked in the top 10 among freshman pitchers with his 2.42 earned run average.
An all-MAAC First-Team selection, Davis led the MAAC in ERA (2.42), victories and complete games with his 12 victories and 10 complete games setting Canisius program records as well. Davis allowed two or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 13 starts. In conference play, Davis was 7-1 with a 1.61 ERA, allowing 53 hits and 11 walks in 56 innings pitched.
Davis, along with senior Kevin Mailloux (Windsor, Ont.), was named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List. The Wallace Award is presented annually to the top collegiate baseball player.
The Canisius College baseball team set a program-record with 41 victories during the 2008 season and earned its first MAAC regular-season title since 1994. The Golden Griffins return 21 letterwinners from last year’s team.
