MAAC Offensive Player of the Week

Sophomore, IF, 6-1/165, Springfield, VA/West Springfield

 

Deering smashed three home runs in a doubleheader against Manhattan on Saturday, helping the Purple Eagles become the first team to take a series from the first-place Jaspers. Prior to the weekend, the middle infielder had just two career home runs. In Saturday’s game two, Deering’s three-run homer in the fifth inning proved to be the difference maker in a 7-4 victory. He connected on a pair of solo home runs in his first two plate appearances in game one. Overall for the weekend, Deering batted .625 (5-for-8) with five RBIs, four extra base hits and three home runs, while boasting a career-best 1.875 slugging percentage and a .700 on-base percentage.

 

MAAC Defensive Player of the Week

 

ROB GARIANO, FAIRFIELD

Junior, RHP, 5-10/180, Nutley, NJ/Nutley

 

Gariano tossed a one-hit complete shutout with nine strikeouts for his fifth win of the season in Fairfield’s 12-0 win over Iona. Gariano (5-3) faced the minimum through 4.1 innings, striking out six of the first 10 batters he faced. After the hit, Gariano struck out three of the final five batters he faced. It is the second one-hit complete game shutout of the season for the Gariano and his fourth complete game of the year. With his nine strikeouts on the day, he moved into third all-time on Fairfield’s career list.

 

MAAC Rookie of the Week

 

DAN PAOLINI, SIENA

Freshman, 2B, 6-0/180, Stratford, CT/Bunnell

 

Paolini batted .720 (18-25) in six games this week for the Saints.  He posted multi-hit games in all six contests, homered four times, drove in 10 runs and scored seven times.  He posted a 1.320 slugging percentage, a .750 on-base percentage and a 2.070 OPS.  Paolini raised his MAAC-leading batting average to .427 and his 79 hits this season stand just two hits shy of the school’s all-time single season record.
