No. 4 Manhattan College defeated No. 2 Siena College, 4-3, in the second round of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship. The Jaspers play No. 3 Marist College tomorrow, May 12 at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN3.

The Jaspers recorded three runs in the first inning off Saints' starter, freshman Maddie McMahon. All-MAAC Rookie Team selection, Christine Gebhardt drove in the game's first run with a single to left-center field that scored All-MAAC Second Teamer, outfielder Shannon Puthe.

2017 All-MAAC First Team selection, sophomore Lauren Pitney hit a two-run home run to extend the Jaspers lead to 3-0. Pitney went 2-3 with a home run, three RBI, one run scored, and one walk. The sophomore accounted for Manhattan's fourth run of the game with a RBI single in the top of the third inning.

Jaspers' junior Briana Matazinsky earned the win, her 15th of the season. The All-MAAC Team selection tossed 5.0 innings in relief, allowed one run, none earned, on three hits. She struck out three and walked two. 2017 MAAC Rookie of the Year, Nicole Williams got the start for Manhattan and pitched 2.0 innings, allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits. She struck out three and walked two.

Freshman infielder/outfielder Patricia Kalesse went 1-3 with an RBI for Siena. 2017 MAAC Player of the Year Madysen Cossack went 0-1 with three walks. The Saints stranded 10 runners on base, went 6-28 at the plate as a team, and 2-10 with two outs.

Siena scored two runs off a pair of Manhattan errors. Saints' sophomore outfielder Jess Vollmer reached on an infield single and Kalesse scored on an errant throw in the bottom of the second inning. Kalesse reached on an error in the bottom of the third inning that scored freshman outfielder Lauren Sabihon.

The No. 2 seeded Saints have been eliminated from the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship and finished the season (21-30, 14-6 MAAC).

No. 3 Marist College earned its first win of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship over No. 1 Iona College, 3-0, to advance to the third round of play. The Red Foxes face No. 4 Manhattan College tomorrow, May 12 at 1:30 p.m.

Red-shirt senior Jessica Van Alphen pitched a complete game two-hit shutout to improve to (13-3) on the season. She struck out six and walked one. Van Alphen surrendered both hits to Gaels' senior infielder Katie Newton (2-3). The rest of Iona's lineup went 0-20 against Van Alphen.

The lefty retired the last 11 batters she faced to close out the game. Van Aphen notched her ninth complete game and fourth shutout of the year. She lowered her ERA to 1.85, which is the lowest mark in the conference.

Marist did all of its scoring in the first inning, when it put three runs on the board against Iona's starter, freshman Marnie Skinner. Senior outfielder Janna Korak hit a two-run double and senior catcher Rebecca Freeman followed with an RBI ground out. Both Korak and Freeman were All-MAAC First Team selections.

The Red Foxes hit .300 (3-10) with runners on base, opposed to the Gaels, who hit .111 (1-9) with runners on. Van Alphen held Iona hitless with runners in scoring position (0-4) and with the bases loaded (0-3).

The All-MAAC Rookie Team selection, Skinner (8-9) tossed a complete game for the Gaels and took the loss. She surrendered three runs, earned, on five hits. The freshman struck out five and walked two. After the first inning, Skinner pitched 6.0 scoreless innings and allowed four hits. The outing marked her 11th complete game of the season.

With the loss, No. 1 Iona has been eliminated from the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship. The Gaels finished the season (26-22, 15-5 MAAC).  

The 2017 MAAC Softball Championship is a double elimination style tournament with the Championship final taking place on Saturday, May 13 at noon. If the team coming out of the loser's bracket defeats the team in the winners' bracket, the second and deciding game takes place at 2:30 p.m.

The winner of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Softball Selection Show is on Sunday, May 14 on ESPN2 at 10:00 p.m.
