Siena's Hasbrouck Named Preseason Player of the Year

Edison, NJ - Siena College senior guard Kenny Hasbrouck has been named the 2008-09 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, as chosen by the MAAC’s 10 head coaches.

Hasbrouck is joined on the first team by two teammates – junior forward Alex Franklin and junior guard/forward Edwin Ubiles – along with Fairfield University senior guard Jonathan Han and Rider University junior guard Ryan Thompson.

Hasbrouck, the 2008 Citizens Bank MAAC Basketball Championship MVP, earned a spot on last year’s All-MAAC First Team after ranking in the top 15 of several MAAC categories. He averaged 16.1 points (sixth) per contest for the Saints, and led the league in steals with 2.26 a night. He also shot 38.9 percent from three-point range (14th) and 71.9 percent from the free throw line (15th). Hasbrouck netted double-digit points in 26 of 34 contests for the Green and Gold.

Franklin, who was named to the 2008 Citizens Bank MAAC Basketball Championship All-Tournament Team, was a All-MAAC Second Team selection last season. He ranked seventh on the MAAC scoring chart, averaging 15.1 points an outing. Franklin is the league’s top returning rebounder this season, after pulling down 7.8 caroms a night for the Saints. He also ranked fifth in field goal percentage (56.8 percent) and sixth in steals (1.59 per game).

Ubiles, a member of the 2008 Citizens Bank MAAC Basketball Championship All-Tournament Team, also earned a spot on the All-MAAC First Team last season. He ranked fourth in the MAAC in scoring, averaging 17.0 points per outing. Ubiles finished fourth in the MAAC in three-point field goal percentage (42.0 percent), 10th in field goal percentage (52.6 percent) and 15th in steals (1.21 per game). He had 33 double-digit scoring efforts during the 2007-08 season.

Han, a All-MAAC Second Team choice last season, led the led the league in assists, dishing out 6.20 an outing, and three-point field goal percentage, netting 44.7 percent from behind the arc. He led the Stags in scoring with 11.7 points per game. He also connected on 47.5 percent of his attempts from the field and 76.0 percent from the charity stripe.

Thompson, a member of the 2007-08 All-MAAC Second Team, finished his sophomore campaign eighth on the MAAC scoring list, netting 15.0 points a night for the Broncs. He is Rider’s top returning rebounder, with 6.2 boards per outing last season. Thompson also owned a 53.7 percent field goal percentage, good for eight place in the league statistics.
