Iona Men, Women Take MAAC Cross Country Championships

Riverdale, NY - The Iona College men and women were victorious at the 2009 MAAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, New York. Iona's Ryan Sheridan and Anna Holm-Jorgensen were the men's and women's individual winners, respectively.
The Iona men's team, currently ranked 11th in the nation, has now won 19 consecutive MAAC Cross Country Championships. The Gaels took the first three places, and seven of the first nine, to win the meet with 17 points. Marist College placed second with 57 points, while Rider University was third with 115.
The Iona women have now won five consecutive MAAC Championships and six overall. The Gaels put three runners in the top four to lead them to a meet low 27 points. Marist finished second with 56 points, followed by Canisius College with 66 points.
Sheridan, a sophomore from Melville, New York, finished the 8k course in 25:37.1. Fellow Gaels Thorsten Baumeister and Alexander Soderberg finished second (25:41.5) and third (25:42.1), respectively. Loyola University's Dan McDevitt finished fourth (25:49.3).
Holm-Jorgensen, a graduate student from Broenshoej, Denmark, finished the 6k course in 22:40.9, almost 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Addie DiFrancesco of Marist. Holm-Jorgensen becomes the fourth straight Iona woman to win the individual title. Iona's Marion Joly-Testault placed third (22:55.2), while Annelore Desaedeleer, last year's champion, finished fourth.
The 2009 MAAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year awards went to Iona's Ricardo Santos for the second straight season.
