Edison, N.J. - For the first time in 15 years, the Fairfield University men's basketball program (21-5, 14-2 MAAC) has earned the MAAC regular season crown and the top seed in the upcoming 2011 Spark Energy MAAC Basketball Championship with a 61-54 victory over Marist at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard earlier this evening.

Previously, the Stags earned a share of the regular season crown with Iona College during the 1995-96 season, with both teams finishing 10-4 in league play, but the Gaels took the top seed in the 1996 tournament using the MAAC tie-breaker procedure. Fairfield captured the 1985-86 regular season title after finishing 13-1 in the MAAC. The Stags were the number one seed in the 1986 tournament at the then Meadowlands Arena, and went on to defeat Manhattan College (80-56), Saint Peter's College (49-47) and The College of Holy Cross (67-64) to claim their first MAAC Championship title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

As the number one seed, Fairfield will take on the winner of the #8/#9 game on Saturday, March 5 in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Spark Energy MAAC Men's Basketball Championship at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard. The men's semifinals will take place on Sunday, March 6 at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., and the championship final will be held on Monday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m.
