Bronx, N.Y. - The Iona College men's and women's cross country teams claimed the 2011 MAAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, NY. Iona's Leonard Korir was the men's individual champion, while fellow Gael Hollie Rowland won the women's race.
The Iona men, currently ranked 10th in the nation, had the top 5 finishers, sweeping the team title with 15 points. It is the program's 21st consecutive MAAC Championship. Marist College finished in second with 66 points, while Rider University was third with 75.
The Iona women claimed their seventh straight conference title with 18 points. Marist College placed second with 60 points followed by Loyola University with 79.
Korir, a junior from Iten, Kenya, won the men's 8k race in 24:41.4. It is his second straight individual MAAC Cross Country title. Behind Korir, teammates Matt Bayley and Mitch Goose completed the top three with times of 24:42.9 and 24:43.7, respectively.
Rowland, a junior from Mönchengladbach, Germany, won the women's 6k race and broke the course record with a time of 20:44.7. Teammates Heidi Gregson and Regina Neumeyer rounded out the top three with times of 21:22.3 and 22:57.2, respectively.
