MAAC Announces 2011-12 Women's Basketball All-Rookie Team

Edison, NJ - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has announced the 2011-12 Women's Basketball All-Rookie Team, as selected by the league's head coaches.

The All-Rookie Team consists of Canisius College's Kayla Hoohuli, Iona College's Damika Martinez and Aleesha Powell, Loyola University Maryland's Kara Marshall, and Niagara University's Meghan McGuinness. One of these five players will be named the 2011-12 Rookie of the Year, also selected by the MAAC head coaches. The Rookie of the Year will be announced at the Postseason Awards Show on Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 pm at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The show will be broadcast live on MAAC.TV.  

Hoohuli, a 5-7 guard from St. Mary's, Pa., was first among freshman in 3-point field goals made with 54 and was third on the freshman scoring chart, averaging 8.5 points per game. Hoohuli was the MAAC Rookie of the Week twice this season.

Martinez, a 5-7 guard from Meridan, Conn., led the league in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game. She was named to the 2012 All-MAAC Second Team. Martinez was the top freshman in rebounding (4.9), field goal percentage (41.2), and was third among MAAC Rookies in three-point field goal percentage (32.2). She was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week four times and MAAC Player of the Week on Jan. 9.

Powell, a 5-6 guard from Philadelphia, Pa., was third among league rookies in free throw percentage (74.0). She scored 7.6 points per game and also had 44 steals on the season. Powell earned league Rookie of the Week honors twice.

Marshall, a 5-8 guard from Gaithersburg, Md., was the second-best scorer among freshman, averaging 11.0 points per contest. She was also second in the conference in free throw percentage (81.3) and tied for fifth in steals per game (2.0). Marshall has three MAAC Rookie of the Week honors to her name this season.

McGuinness, a 5-10 guard from Lincroft, N.J., led the conference in three-point percentage at 45.5, making 51 three-pointers for the season She averaged 7.0 points per game and shot 85.7 percent from the free throw line. McGuinness was named the league's Rookie of the Week on Feb. 13.
