Martinez, Yarde, Johnson Earn All-Met Honors

NEW YORK - Damika Martinez of Iona College was named the 2011-12 All-Met Division I women's college basketball rookie of the year on Tuesday by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.

Also receiveing honors were Corielle Yarde of Marist College, who was named to the All-Met first team, and Taryn Johnson of Fairfield University, who was chosen to the All-Met second team.

Joining Yarde on the All-Met first team: Nadirah McKenith and Da'Shena Stevens, St. John's; Corielle Yarde, Marist; April Sykes, Rutgers; Shante Evans, Hofstra.

Named to the All-Met second team: Ashley Palmer, LIU Brooklyn; Jasmine Crew, Seton Hall; Taryn Johnson, Fairfield; Mariyah Laury, FDU; Khadijah Rushdan, Rutgers.

Martinez, a 5-7 guard from Meridan, Conn., led the league in scoring, averaging 16.0 points per game. She was named to the 2012 All-MAAC Second Team. Martinez was the top freshman in rebounding (4.9), field goal percentage (41.5), and was third among MAAC Rookies in three-point field goal percentage (32.9). She was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week four times and MAAC Player of the Week on Jan. 9.

Martinez was also named the 2012 MAAC Rookie of the Year.

Yarde, a 5-8 senior guard from Reading, Pa., averaged 14.3 points per game and was third in the league with 4.2 assists per game. She grabbed 6.5 rebounds per game, ninth in the league, and had a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio (second). Yarde was selected as the MAAC Player of the Week three times and was also named the Preseason Player of the Year in October. Yarde was also the MVP of the MAAC Tournament, averaging 14.6 points per game in three contests. She was an All-Met second team pick last season.

Johnson, a 5-11 senior forward from Brockton, Mass., led the MAAC in field goal percentage (54.5%) and blocked shots (1.7 per game). She finished in the top-10 in scoring (12.4 ppg), rebounding (7.7 rpg), and steals (2.0 spg). Johnnson was chosen as the league's Player of the Week twice. This is her second-consecutive All-Met second team selection.

The All-Met players and coaches will be honored Thursday evening, April 26, at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, N.Y.
