"The MAAC Preseason Awards Shows are the next step in the evolution of the league's relationship with ESPN3 ‘" notes Rich Ensor, Commissioner of the MAAC. "The opportunity to showcase the MAAC's men's and women's basketball programs to a national audience builds upon an event that, in the day, was limited to media and a few guests, and now reaches into over 73 million homes through our partnership with ESPN3. The public will become better acquainted with the MAAC student-athletes and coaches, who are leaders and educators of their programs. In addition, the MAAC will honor teams from the 2012 season that participated in NCAA post-season competition and will immediately have an opportunity to measure their 2013 potential as the teams compete in key non-conference match-ups on the first official day of competition for the 2012-13 season."
The doubleheader begins with the MAAC Women's Basketball Preseason Awards Show, which is set for 5:15 p.m. and will be held at Marist College's McCann Arena. The Red Foxes will display their 2012 MAAC Championship banner, while the results of the MAAC women's basketball coaches' preseason poll and MAAC Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year will be announced. Following the completion of the show, fans can watch Marist take on the University of Vermont in their season home opener at 6 p.m.
"We are ecstatic to be able to host the MAAC Preseason Awards Show in the first year that it is held on a campus site," said Brian Giorgis, head women's basketball coach at Marist. "It is a nice reward for winning the MAAC last season. McCann has been a very special arena for us to play in over the years, and it is a great honor not only for our team, but also for the Marist community."
The MAAC Men's Basketball Preseason Awards Show is scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m., live from the Hynes Athletics Center on the campus of Iona College. The Gaels will raise their 2012 NCAA At-Large Banner following the announcement of the MAAC men's basketball coaches' preseason poll and MAAC Men's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. Then at 9 p.m., fans can catch Iona hosting the University of Denver to open the 2012-13 season.
"Opening night at the Hynes Center will be a great opportunity for the MAAC to showcase its preseason awards show," said Iona head men's basketball coach Tim Cluess. "We look forward to hosting the league and are happy for the chance to start the year against a quality opponent in Denver on the ESPN Family of Networks."
The men's and women's basketball preseason All-MAAC Teams will be released on Tuesday, October 30. The members of the Preseason All-MAAC First Teams are finalists for the 2012-13 MAAC Men's and Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year.
