New Rochelle, N.Y. - Loyola University Maryland, the defending MAAC champion, is the preseason favorite to win the 2013 MAAC Men's Basketball Championship, according to the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Loyola received seven of the first-place votes and 97 points, followed by Manhattan College, which received two first-place votes and 89 points. Iona College, last season's regular season champion, finished in third with 70 points. Fairfield University followed in fourth place with 60 points, while Niagara University took fifth with 58 points. Siena College received 55 points to finish sixth, followed by Rider University (39 points) in seventh, Marist College (37) in eighth, Canisius College (27) in ninth and Saint Peter's University (18) in 10th to round out the poll.

Last season, the Greyhounds made their first appearance in the MAAC Championship final in 18 years, when they previously won the league crown in 1994. Loyola returns four starters from that squad, including 2012-13 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Erik Etherly along with Preseason All-MAAC Second Team picks Dylon Cormier and Robert Olson. Etherly is the Greyhounds' top returning scorer (13.7 ppg) and rebounder (7.5 rpg). Cormier contributed 13.4 points and 3.3 rebounds and outing, while Olson averaged 11.1 points per game, connecting on 45.1 percent of his shots from the field and 43.1 percent from three-point range. Ninth-year head coach Jimmy Patsos will also look to R.J. Williams, Anthony Winbush and Jordan Latham to help lead the squad to back-to-back MAAC Championships.

Manhattan returns all five starters that helped propel the squad to a tie for third place in the MAAC standings last season after being picked to finish eighth in the 2011-12 MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Jaspers will be led by Preseason All-MAAC First Team selection George Beamon as well as Emmy Andujar, Michael Alvarado and Rhamel Brown of the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team. Last season, Beamon led the MAAC in scoring, registering 19.0 points per game, and Brown, the 2011-12 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, was the top blocker, recording 2.5 stops an outing. Second-year head coach Steve Masiello will also rely on the efforts of Roberto Colonette, Donovan Kates and Mohamed Koita as the Jaspers look to earn Manhattan's first MAAC championship title since 2004.
