DURHAM, N.C. - The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team concluded its season on Saturday with a 6-0 loss to No. 15/19 Duke University in the first round of the 2012 NCAA College Cup at Koskinen Stadium.

With the loss to Duke, Loyola ends the seaon 12-6-4, while the Blue Devils continue onto the second round 13-5-2 overall.

"Duke is an exceptionally athletic and technically skilled team," head coach Katherine Remy Vettori said. "We were a bit shell shocked by them in the first half, but came out fighting in the second half. I am really proud of our effort and the season that we had.

"I also could not be more proud of our senior class. They had a tremendous career, starting with an NCAA Tournament appearance their freshman year and ending it with another one."

The Greyhounds' best scoring opportunity came in the fourth minute when senior Gigi Mangione took control of a ball at midfield and sent it ahead to classmate Nichole Schiro. Schiro dribbled around defenders and up the field before sending a pass to senior Katelyn McFadden on the right wing. Her shot went just over the crossbar though.

Duke then got the scoring started in the ninth minute when Kaitlyn Kerr spun around and finished the rebound of a blocked shot from about eight yards out.

The Greyhounds attempted to create an opportunity of their own in the 22nd minute, but Laura Weinberg broke the play and carried the ball the field before sending a cross to the face of the goal for a streaking Cassie Pecht to finish.

Duke tacked on a third goal in the 29th minute when Kerr collected a ball in the box and a tucked away a shot from about six yards.

Junior Didi Haracic stopped the Blue Devils' next attempt, blocking a shot from Katie Trees, but the rebound went to Kelly Cobb, who one-timed it into the back of the net in the 40th minute.

Callie Simpkins then added a second goal for Duke within the minute when she finished a cross from Trees.

Duke tried to get on the board first in the second half, sending a rocket at Haracic in the 66th minute, but Haracic was there to block the 10-yard shot.

The Blue Devils kept pressuring through and worked the ball inside to Kerr who completed a hat trick in the 68th minute.

Defensively, Haracic and sophomore Colleen Folan combined to make seven saves throughout the contest.

Loyola's 12 seniors - Nicky Alagna, Kelsey Donohue, Julia Hajjar, Danielle Ippolito, Gigi Mangione, Tessa McClenahan, Katelyn McFadden, Kelsey Rene, Nichole Schiro, Jenny Thornton and Brittany Yancey - conclude their career with an overall record of 44-32-10. Throughout their four years, they won two MAAC titles, a MAAC regular season title and made two NCAA College Cup appearances.
