Baron and Gilbert Claim Men's Basketball Weekly Honors

Baron averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and a steal in two games last week as the Golden Griffins closed out their run in the Chevrolet Gotham Classic with games against Alcorn State and Detroit. In the win over Alcorn State, Canisius' sixth-straight home win dating back to last season, the 6-foot-2 guard scored 19 points and dished out five assists to go with four rebounds. In the team's loss to Detroit on the road Dec. 30, Baron scored a team-high 20 points while matching his career-high with eight boards. He was also credited with seven assists in the loss to the Titans, the 10th time this year he's recorded five or more assists in a game. For the week, he shot 40.7 percent from the floor, 38.5 percent from 3-point land and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line, highlighted by his 9-for-10 effort from the charity stripe in the win over Alcorn Dec. 27.
Rookie of the Week
Marcus Gilbert, Fairfield, Fr., F, 6-6, 185, Smyrna, Del./Academy of New Church
Gilbert posted a career-high 10 rebounds and just missed a double-double with eight points in 32 minutes of work in Fairfield's 55-54 victory at Old Dominion. He also added two blocks and two steals in the win. Gilbert made three of four field goal attempts, one of two three-point tries and netted his only free throw try.
