The 2013 NCAA women’s soccer season begins play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in a big way this weekend as eight teams make their debuts on Friday (Aug. 23), and two more will see their first action on Sunday (Aug. 25). One final league school will open its season on Monday (Aug. 26).
Four MAAC teams will open play at home on Friday, and four will be on the road. Friday’s busy slate features the season opener for MAAC preseason favorite Fairfield, which will play at Army at 7 p.m. The Stags earned the top spot in the MAAC preseason poll, selected by the conference coaches, by a slim 2-point margin.
Siena, picked sixth in the preseason poll, will host Massachusetts at 4 p.m. on Friday. Saint Peter’s will also get underway at 4 p.m. with a home match against Wagner. Two more MAAC teams will open play with 7 p.m. starts on Friday. Niagara, picked fifth in the preseason poll, will host Youngstown State while Manhattan will face Fordham at home.
Four MAAC squads get underway with road contests, including the Fairfield at Army match. Rider, picked fourth in the preseason poll, opens at Bucknell with a 4 p.m. start. Iona will play at Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m., and Canisius will visit Cleveland State at 7 p.m.
Eight MAAC teams will be in action on Sunday, August 25, including the two newest members of the conference, Monmouth and Quinnipiac, who will make their 2013 season debuts. Monmouth, the No. 3 pick in the preseason poll, will take on Delaware at 1 p.m. at home, while Quinnipiac, the No. 8 team, will be on the road at Georgetown at 1 p.m.
Sunday’s slate also includes Canisius’ home opener against Youngstown State at 1; Fairfield at Wagner, 1; Iona at Towson, 1; Manhattan at Lafayette, noon; Niagara at Robert Morris, 1; and Siena hosting Binghamton at 1.
Marist will be the final MAAC squad to make its 2013 debut when it visits Drexel on Monday, August 26 at 7 p.m. The Red Foxes were picked to finish second in the MAAC in 2013, and were just two points away from the top slot.
Three matches from the opening weekend will be available on MAAC.TV. The Saint Peter’s vs. Wagner matchup on Friday at 4 p.m. will be available on MAAC.TV, followed by the Manhattan-Fordham match at 7 p.m. (which will be streamed in HD). On Sunday, the Canisius vs. Youngstown State matchup will also be available on MAAC.TV.
