Edison, N.J. – Niagara University’s Shane Baxter was named the MAAC Men's Swimmer of the Week, while Clare Battaglia of Canisius College, earned the award on the Women's side. Eddie Quarantillo of Canisius College and Taylor Epstein, another Golden Griff, were chosen as the Men’s and Women's Divers of the Week.
Baxter finished as the top performer for the Purple Eagles, as the junior recorded three individual victories in addition to being a member of a winning relay team en route to Niagara’s 158-104 win over the Waterloo Warriors. Baxter secured wins in the 100 and 200 backstroke with finishing times of 51.11 and 1:52.89, respectively, and also claimed the top spot in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.31. The Ottawa, Canada native combined with three other Purple Eagles in the 200 medley relay to claim first place with a time of 1:37.37.
Battaglia raced her way to three victories this weekend including two individual, and one relay in the Griffs’ 144-99 victory over Geneseo on Saturday. Battaglia took first in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:15.29. She then earned her second individual victory of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.42. Battaglia also kicked off the meet with a first place finish, as she swam the first leg of the Griffs’ 200 yard medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:52.58.
After breaking a record that stood for 18-years in the 1-meter dive on Oct. 26, it took just one week for the junior diver to up his mark. Quarantillo scored a 316.60 in the 1-meter dive in a first-place finish during the Griffs’ dual meet against Geneseo on Saturday. Quarantillo followed that performance with a 342.07 in the 3-meter dive, which shattered his own school-record by 41 points.
Taylor Epstein, finished in second place on the 3-meter board at Geneseo this past Saturday with a score of 238.35. The junior finished in third place on the 1-meter board with a score of 232.30.
