Release: 02/04/2014

Edison, NJ – The Marist College men’s tennis team and the Quinnipiac University women’s team were chosen as favorites to win the MAAC Championship in 2014, according to a vote by the league’s respective head coaches.

The Marist men, who have won five of the last six MAAC titles, were unanimously selected as the preseason pick with 64 points in the poll. The Red Foxes return every all but two from the team that defeated Fairfield in last year’s MAAC Championship match. 2013 MAAC Championship Most Outstanding Performer and 2012 MAAC Player of the Year Lorenzo Rossi leads the way for 16th-year head coach Tim Smith. Also returning is 2013 MAAC Player of the Year Dalen Klassen and All-MAAC first team selections Joe Dube and Fredrik Bjerke.

Newcomers Monmouth and Quinnipiac finished second and third with 48 points and 45 points, respectively. Last year’s runner up, Fairfield, finished fourth with 43 points followed by Niagara (39), Saint Peter’s (21), Siena (20) and Rider (8).

The Quinnipiac women topped the poll with 78 points. Head Coach Mike Quitko, an eight-time Northeast Conference Coach of the Year, has led the Bobcats to the conference championship title match in seven of the last eight seasons including four championships. This year Quinnipiac is led by 2013 All-NEC first team selections Jacqueline Raynor, Michelle Dassa and Ariana Launie.

Fairfield was second in the women’s poll with 71 points, followed by Marist with 65. Niagara finished fourth with 55, while Siena was fifth with 46. Saint Peter’s tallied 32 points to finish sixth, followed by Manhattan (28), Monmouth (21) and Rider (9).

The 2014 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will take place at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey from April 26-27.
