Bryana Borrelli Appointed Siena Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach
Release: August 05, 2014
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D’Argenio has appointed Bryana Borrelli to take over the helm of the women’s lacrosse program. The sixth head coach in Siena Women’s Lacrosse history, Borrelli spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Duquesne University.
“Bryana is a rising star in the profession with great knowledge of the game from her experience both as a top player and as an assistant coach,” said D’Argenio. “Her progressive experience as an assistant and her passion for the game will benefit our student athletes.”
Borrelli helped guide Duquesne to 25 wins and a 10-4 record in the Atlantic 10 in her two seasons as the Dukes’ defensive coordinator and goalies coach. This spring, Duquesne boasted a 10-game winning streak while tying a program record with 14 wins and was among teams receiving votes to be ranked in several major national top-20 polls for multiple weeks. In her first season with the Dukes, the team won 11 games and advanced to the A-10 Championship Game.
Under Borrelli’s tutelage, Duquesne’s defense ranked 14th nationally in caused turnovers this spring (9.61). She helped mentor IWLCA Second Team All-Region selection and two-time defending A-10 Midfielder of the Year Amanda Kidder as well as 2013 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Kristen Gregory.
“I could not be more excited to begin this journey here at Siena College and become a part of the Saints family,” noted Borrelli. “I would like to thank John D’Argenio for giving me this tremendous opportunity and Mike Scerbo (Duquesne Head Coach) for helping me grow under his system for the past two years. We already have some great pieces in place here at Siena and I could not be more thrilled to lead this program to the top of the MAAC and into the NCAA Tournament. I cannot wait for the year to begin and am looking forward to helping mentor these young women to grow as student athletes both on and off the field.”
Prior to her stint at Duquesne, Borrelli served in a similar role at the University of New Hampshire in 2012. She began her coaching career as an assistant at Iona College in 2011 where she helped guide the Gaels to their best start in MAAC history and just the program’s second-ever conference tournament berth.
A 2010 graduate of Hofstra University, Borrelli appeared in 62 games (41 starts) on defense for the Pride registering 57 groundballs and 36 caused turnovers. A four-time Colonial Athletic Association Commissioners Academic Award recipient and two-time IWLCA Academic Honor Roll awardee, Borrelli advanced to the Second Round of tryouts for the United States Developmental Team in 2009. Hofstra achieved national ranking during both her freshman and senior years and captured the CAA Tournament Title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament following her rookie season.
Borrelli earned her B.S. in Physical Education from Hofstra and was awarded her M.S. in Psychology with a specialization in Sport Psychology from Capella University last December. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Borrelli played at Irondequoit High where she helped the team win a pair of Section V State Championships.
Borrelli inherits a Siena Women’s Lacrosse program which posted a 5-12 overall record this spring and tied for fifth in the MAAC with a 3-5 conference mark. The Saints are expected to return the program’s top-seven scorers and 93.8% of the team’s scoring from last season as well as nine starters and all three goalies.
