Quinnipiac Selected as MAAC Field Hockey Preseason Favorites

Edison, N.J. – Quinnipiac University was selected as the preseason favorites for 2014 in field hockey, as voted by the league’s six head coaches. Quinnipiac, the 2013 MAAC Champions, earned 32 points with three first place votes to edge out Monmouth University, which earned 28 points and two first place votes. 

Quinnipiac finished with a 14-7 overall record and 5-1 conference mark in 2013,  being named co-regular season champions in the league’s inaugural season. The Bobcats, who went 3-0 at home during the season, were crowned the 2013 MAAC Field Hockey champions after defeating Robert Morris 1-0 in the MAAC championship final.  During the 2013 season, Quinnipiac led the MAAC in goals scored, goals scored per game, assists, assists per game, scoring average and defensive saves. The Bobcats collected 7 shutouts while taking over 13 shots per game. Quinnipiac claimed three regular season major awards in 2013, including Megan Conaboy’s MAAC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and Jess Rusin’s MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and MAAC Co-Player of the Year awards. Seven Bobcats were named to All-MAAC teams, including a league high five All-MAAC First Team selections.

Monmouth’s Trish O’Dwyer was chosen as the 2014 MAAC Field Hockey Preseason Player of the Year. O’Dwyer, a native of Dublin, Ireland, scored 12 goals last season ranking third in the conference. Her 29 points ranked second in the MAAC and she ranked fifth in shots taken with 60. O’Dwyer was named a 2013 All-MAAC First Team selection and a 2013 All-Academic Team member.

Monmouth University finished second in the poll with 28 points. Rider University was a close third with 27 points, followed by Bryant University (19), Sacred Heart University (11), and Siena College (9).

The preseason All-MAAC team consists of Bryant’s Rosie Bird, O’Dwyer and Quinnipiac’s Danielle Allan at forward. The midfielders are Bryant’s Erin Karcher, Rider’s Carlotta Clotet Alsina and Liz Bergman of Sacred Heart. Bryant’s Kelsey Hiltebeitel, Quinnipiac’s Megan Osanitsch and Rider teammates Stacey Dileo and Dezarae Fillmyer were selected as the defenders. The goalkeeper is Quinnipiac’s Megan Conaboy.
