Senior guard Marina Lizarazu averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 steals, and 3.0 assists per game in a 2-0 week for the Gaels. The guard shoot 56.0 percent from the floor, and 45.5 percent from three-point range en route to her third MAAC Player of the Week award this season. Against Niagara University on Thursday, February 2 Lizarazu had a game-high 18 points on 41.0 percent shooting. She set a season-high with three triples, while collecting three assists, and three steals. On Saturday, February 4 Lizarazu scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 (69%) shooting against Canisius College. She hit 2-of-3 from long range and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Additionally, she clicked on three assists and had a game-high five steals. Lizarazu now has eight 20+ point games this season. She has played all forty minutes in each of Iona’s six games during its six-game winning streak.
In a two game week for the Red Foxes, freshman guard Rebekah Hand averaged 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game, while shooting 44.0 percent from the field. The freshman earns her sixth MAAC Rookie of the Week honor this season. In the Red Foxes first game of the week, a road win against Siena College, Hand scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and swiped a steal in 36 minutes of action. In Hand’s second game of the week, she continued with her versatile performance against Siena to score 14 points, pull down nine rebounds, and dish out five assists for the second consecutive game. Hand also had a block and a steal in the Red Foxes road win over Saint Peter’s University.
