No. 12 Quinnipiac Earns Its First-Ever NCAA Tournament Victory Over No. 5 Marquette
CORAL GABLES, FL – No. 12 Quinnipiac University defeated No. 5 Marquette University, 68-65, to advance to the Second Round of the 2017 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The victory marks the first NCAA Tournament win in the Bobcats’ Division I program history. Quinnipiac plays No. 4 University of Miami on Monday, March 20, in Coral Gables, FL.
Quinnipiac is the first team from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) to win an NCAA Tournament game since No. 13 Marist College defeated No. 4 University of Georgia, 76-60 in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats become the third MAAC representative in the conference’s history to win a game in the NCAA Tournament (Marist, five times, last 2012 and La Salle 1989).
The 2016-17 MAAC Champions improve to (28-6) after its First Round victory in the NCAA Tournament. Red-shirt sophomore forward Jen Fay scored a team-high 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. The forward registered a game-high four steals in 24 minutes of play.
Sophomore forward Paula Strautmane added 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Sophomore guard/forward Aryn McClure recorded 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists in 31 minutes of action.
The 2016-17 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship MVP, red-shirt senior guard Adily Martucci recorded a pivotal block of Marquette’s Natisha Hiedeman’s jumper with 20.0 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Hiedeman’s field goal attempt could’ve tied the game for the Golden Eagles, with the score being 65-63 at that moment.
After the first quarter the Bobcats led 26-13 and led in the game for a total of 38:51. They led by as many as 19 points with 5:51 to play in the third quarter. Quinnipiac shot 28-of-53 from the field (52.8%) and totaled 20 assists as a team. The Bobcats scored 23 points off turnovers opposed to the Golden Eagles, who scored 11. Quinnipiac received 19 points from its bench (Fabbri eight points, Manz eight points, and Shewan three points).
The Bobcats played in their third NCAA Tournament game (1-2) in the program’s Division I history, which dates to 1998-99. Quinnipiac has made it to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last five years and it is the second time that they are representing the MAAC. This also marked the sixth consecutive national postseason appearance for the Bobcats.
