BUFFALO, NY – No. 2 Fairfield University has defeated No. 3 Marist College, 15-8, to advance to the 2017 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship game. The Stags have advanced to their eighth MAAC Championship game in the program's history and first since 2015.
Fairfield takes on the winner of tonight's second semifinals matchup between No. 1 Canisius College and No. 4 Niagara University. The 2017 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship game takes place on Sunday, May 7 from the Demske Sports Complex on the campus of Canisius College. The Championship final can be streamed live onESPN3.
The 2017 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year, Riley Hellstein led all scorers with a game-high six points (four goals, two assists). The senior scored the game's first goal at the 18:28 mark in the first half off a free position shot. She scored three of her four goals during the first half. Hellstein added seven draw controls and picked up one ground ball on the day.
All-MAAC First Teamer Alex Fehmel and senior midfield Scarlett Sulliman both recorded hat tricks in the victory. Each of Fehmel's goals came in the first half. Her first tally put the Stags up 3-1, midway through the first half. All three of her goals were unassisted. Two of Sulliman's scorers came in the second half.
Fairfield outshot Marist, 33-16, and had a total of 20 shots on goal. The Stags recorded 21 ground balls on the day to the Red Foxes 11.
Junior attack Lauren Mazza led Marist with five points (four goals, one assist). All-MAAC Rookie Team selection, Samantha Mehalick added two goals and All-MAAC Second Team representative, Hailey Wagner tallied a game-high nine draw controls and two assists this afternoon.
